What is The Brewing Project (and Why You Should Be Excited)
Written by Beervana Vietnam
Vietnam has had a strong beer culture since it was introduced to the country by the French in the late 19th century. Czech styles started emerging in the 1990’s, and what we know today as “Craft Beer” started taking off in Vietnam in 2015. For the next 20 years, Asia will lead the world in beer consumption and growth, but in SE Asia, there in’t a “unique” SE Asian style of beer, but rather copies of Western styles (German Lager, Czech Pilsner, New England IPA, Irish Stout, etc.) This is why we started The Brewing Project.
Beervana.asia is pleased to announce the Brewing Project Vietnam, a national homebrewing competition with one aim – to popularize Vietnam’s first original beer style. The Brewing Project first started in Thailand in 2018, then came to Indonesia in 2019, and now in Vietnam. This is an annual project that judges and introduces new beers each year.
Beer submissions finished in February, and the beers will be judged on March 7th by International BJCP Certified Judges. The beer must be an original recipe from the brewer, it must include at least 1 local Vietnamese ingredient, and must be brewed by a Vietnamese. Since there is no style guideline for the competition, the beer will be blind judged on “best in show” criteria under BJCP judging rules. The winner will be announced the following week. The winner will then be flown to the legendary USA brewery Rogue in Portland Oregon to brew there. The beer will also be brewed in Vietnam and then Beervana will distribute it nationally. You will have the first chance to try the winning beer in May!
